I think that instead of selling the book, the cover is supposed to appeal to the people who will probably like the story too. And I think this cover may actually achieve that.

I have to agree with the poor quality of the cover...
I used to do a bit of 3D work, so this kind of cover really rubs me the wrong way.
But if it sells with the target audience, hey... Whatever works!

It doesn't detract from the amazing achievement of being published stateside though... Truly inspiring.
